Review: Estee Lauder Doublewear Stay-In-Place Eyeshadow Base

estee_eyeshadowbase.jpg

What They Say: "Keeps your eyecolor in place with 15-hour staying power. Extends the wear of powder eyeshadow and keeps it smooth and crease-free. Ophthalmologist-tested. Fragrance-free."

Jen's Experience: If you have trouble getting your eyeshadow and eyeliner to stay in place, or you're always rubbing your eyes and ruining your make-up artistry, you're going to LOVE this new product from Estee Lauder. Much like their fantastic Doublewear foundation and concealer, this base makes any eyeshadow wear better and longer. I was amazed when I came home from a long day at work (and a serious workout to boot) and saw my powder eyeshadows still in place, and even more amazed that even my gel and liquid eyeliners seem to stay in place throughout the day whenever I wear this eyeshadow base. The colors of my eyeshadows also look a little truer since they're applied over a neutral color. This is one of the best products I've tested in a long time and an absolute essential in my morning make-up routine.

Retail Price: $15.00 (EsteeLauder.com or your local department store counter)

I have tried sooo many eyeshadow bases, the best ever (so far) is Urban Decay. The only reason I am still searching is that U.D seems a little drying on my lids, I find myself trying to decide if I want long wearing and crepe or if I'd rather just re-apply. I know that you have used U.D. and I want to know how this (E.L.) compares to theirs. Thanks so much, M.

Do you know how this compares to Urban Decay Primer Potion? I have great success with it keeping my shadow in place, but I still find that my gel liner (under eye) tends to move throughout the day.

Hi Jen,
Do you apply this base to your lower eye/eyeliner area as well? Do you also apply concealer for your under eye area and if yes, does this base go under the concealer? Thanks!

I don't normally wear eyeliner on my lower eye area, so I don't know how effective it would be there. Do you normally have a problem with your lower liner slipping?

(That was me up above as "Registered User" as well.)

I think I have tried the Urban Decay primer as part of a palette at one point, and I don't remember being overly impressed with it. I will have to see if I still have some around to see how it compares.

Thanks, Jen! When it's hot and humid here in Hawaii, my bottom eyeliner slips especially in the bottom inner corners and the under eye area also sort of darkens as the day progresses. I was using Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner for years but recently switched to Clinique cream liner or Shu Uemura drawing pencil or a combination of both, depending on how much in a rush I am -- and sometimes, I experience the slipping. I sometimes use Aromaleigh Indelible Eyeliner Sealant especially on the bottom eyeliner -- sometimes it works, other time, it doesn't. Your review caught my attention because I just started using (sometimes) Estee Lauder Doublewear Stay in Place concealer!

Jen! I forgot to add: I sometimes use Mary Kay eye primer (which I had received as a gift) but have not really paid attention to how effective it is... I better do so. I'm going on a long trip in several weeks so I've been trying new products that will keep makeup on. There's so much hype about Urban Decay eye primer ... I have been curious about it. Haven't tried any of her products but I enjoy watching her on QVC and have also curious about Mally Beauty's eye shadow base. I have very sensitive combo skin as well and tend to break out... recently reacted to BE Primetime primer...you don't look like you need to use a primer but hope you review face/foundation primers. I'm waiting for Tricia Sawyer's primer which is supposed to come out in November... keeping my fingers crossed that it will not cause me to break out. The other one I've been researching is Dr. Denese's pro-peptide primer. One of them has got to work on people like us prone to breaking out!
