Melissa's DeLush Downlow: Understandably, I was equally excited and trepidacious about trying this product, just as you may be after all the hype it's been getting in the press lately. So let me try to break down the mystique a bit for you.
First of all, the bottle is NOT small (it's 2 oz. worth of product and about 7 inches tall). So it's true that you can get a lot of use out of it. It's basically just like a perfume bottle, spray nozzle and all. Now, they give you some application tips to start:
- Apply makeup as usual, allowing mascara to fully dry before applying Model in a Bottle. This one's obvious.
- Close eyes and hold bottle at a distance of 10-12 inches from the face. This is very important, because the mist, while fine, comes out at a pretty good force and trust me, you won't want this right up your nostrils.
- Fully depress the spray top for each fine mist spray, applying evenly on face.
- Allow 20-30 seconds for Model in a Bottle to dry before opening eyes. You DO want to follow this tip. The fine mist could make your eyes a little irritated if you open them before it dissipates.
- Some heavier or oil-based makeups may require an additional spray or two.
Basically, the stuff DOES work. Your makeup will be set for hours without even a hint of wear-off. And it sort of creates a soft-focus look as well. At first the feeling is strange and until it dries after a few seconds, you might be afraid it's going to be sticky or tight-feeling. But once it dries, it feels perfectly comfortable. However, here are some things to take note of:
- The scent is pretty strong when you spray it on. And the mist is not something you want to breathe in right after you spray and you're standing there with your eyes closed. If it gets in your nose right away it's not the most pleasant sensation. So just take a big breath before you spray. Also, it helps to just turn away right after you spray.
- If some of this stuff gets in your hair, it WILL feel like hairspray, so you might need to brush that out a little afterward.
- While this DOES set your makeup, it doesn't necessarily keep oil production down. Spraying again helps a bit with this, otherwise you may still need to blot at some point during the day if you have oily tendencies.
- If you have very dry skin or highly sensitive skin, you might need to be careful to watch and see if this irritates it at all. While I didn't have any problems with breakouts or irritation, that doesn't mean you definitely won't. Because of the alchohol especially, you may need to be careful.
- The scent at first is quite overwhelming, in an intensely fragrant way. This alone may be too much for you to want to bother with, but once it dries it's actually much MUCH more faint and pleasant.
- While you technically CAN spray this all over, I chose not to spray near my lip area, because I just wasn't comfortable with the chemicals near my mouth.
Overall, I would call this a beneficial product if you worry about your makeup fading or wearing off during the day and want to maintain a fresh, just-applied look for hours on end. This would be especially great for brides, women attending special events, or those who hate touching up throughout the day but find themselves needing to often. Model in a Bottle does it's job, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a "Must-Have" for all women.
